2.1 Mile Time Trial
O'Brien Park
August 30, 2008

Congratulations on a fine effort.  Forty-five runners started this time trial, and all 45 finished!  Although they looked a bit like our cross-town rivals in their purple shirts, the Juniors won the team competition, the third year in a row that this group has come out on top.  Led by Grace and Casey, they finished with 25 points.  In a close race for second, the freshmen and seniors scored 65 points, with the tie being broken by the #6 runner and the advantage going to the freshmen.  Led by Jacquelyn, the freshmen showed that they will be a strong group of runners this year.  In third place, led by Nicole, the seniors held their own and proved that a small team can do the job.  Finishing with 81 points, the sophomores also ran well, with a nice pack led by Kathleen.

Yorkville Invitational
September 3, 2008

The DGS Girls Cross Country team opened the 2008 campaign with a dominating victory at the Yorkville Invitational on Wednesday.

The varsity squad took 1st place scoring 19 points.  The host team, Yorkville was 2nd with 62 points followed by 3. West Aurora-81, 4. Aurora Christian-133, 5. Morris-138, 6. Rosary 156, 7. Plainfield South-160, 8. Oswego East-183 and 9. Lisle-286.  Grace Magliola (Jr) led the Mustangs by taking individual honors with a 19:26 first place time on the muddy, hilly 3 mile course.  Other varsity medalists were 3. Casey Harms (Jr) 19:37, 4. Nicole Thate (Sr) 19:48, 5. Jacquelyn Thate (Fr) 19:56, 6. Jordan Narret (Jr) 20:00 and 10. Abby Lechner (Jr) 20:23.

The JV team also took 1st place with a perfect score of 15 points.  Rosary placed 2nd in the 9-team field with 71 points.  Sophomore, Kendall Coupland paced the Mustangs with a first place finish in her first ever high school cross country meet (21:34 for 3 miles).  Other JV medalists included 2. Rebecca Stearns (Fr) 22:05, 3. Cara Wicklein (Fr) 22:23, 4. Monica Resh (Fr) 22:32, 5. Liz Hernandez (Sr) 22:33, 6. Sam Mugnolo (So) 22:39, 8. Audrey Yurek (Sr) 23:06 and 10. Grace Kikkebusch (So) 23:28.

The big story from Wednesday's meet was our ability to close the gap between our top 3 runners and our 4th and 5th runners in the varsity race.  There was a 34 second 1-5 split, which is pretty good.  This was the downfall of last year's team which averaged a 1 minute 20 second split most of the season.  If we can maintain this small split with our top runners still challenging the lead packs, it will bode very well for what we can accomplish this season.

Peoria Woodruff Invite
September 13, 2008

Running in very muddy conditions, against a huge field, the Mustangs held their own at the Peoria Woodruff Invite.  On the Varsity level, Geneva ran away with the race, scoring just 33 points to second place Hinsdale Central's 102.  Led by Grace Magliola's 20th place finish, the Mustangs claimed 8th place out of 36 teams with 313 points.  In the Open division, 625 runners finished the race, with 54 teams competing.  The Mustangs took home a very respectable 5th place, led by three runners in the top 50 -- Abby Lechner (16th), Rebecca Stearns (32nd), and Cara Wicklein (39th).

Peoria Notre Dame Invite
September 20, 2008

The Varsity squad again traveled to Peoria to take on some of the best teams in the state.  Team champion Palatine scored just 95 points, with York in second with 148.  The Mustangs scored 293 to finish in 9th place out of 48 teams.  This finish does not fully reflect the team's positive improvement from last week.  Despite finishing one place lower than at Woodruff, season best times were recorded by Nicole, Grace, Jacquelyn, Cara, and Molly, and Casey was back in the lineup, just recently returning from injury and not fully 100% yet.  This is an encouraging result and suggests that we will be very tough to beat in our upcoming competitions.

Mustang Run Invitational
September 20, 2008

While the Varsity squad was in Peoria, the rest of the team stayed behind to compete at our home invitational.  The new Varsity team ran a respectable race, finishing in 6th place out of 10 teams, behind champion Wheaton North.  Varsity was led by freshmen Rebecca Stearns and Cara Wicklein, who both finished in the top 25.  JV was somewhat depleted with the absence of several runners lost to the Varsity squad, and while their overall team place was not as high as we had hoped, there were many excellent times recorded and several PRs earned on this hot, humid day.  Katie Jalette led the JV team with her PR and a 26th place finish.  In the Frosh/Soph race, also left without a few top runners who were moved up to Varsity, the team finished in 3rd place behind champion Maine South and runner up Wheaton North.  Frosh/Soph was led by individual medalist Maddie Cahill (3rd) and by a breakthrough race run by Brandi Bradley, who finished in 11th, just one place out of the medals.

West Aurora Invite
October 11, 2008

A lot of good news comes out of this late-season invitational!  On the Varsity level, the team finished in 7th place, led by Nicole Thate's 16th place finish.  Even without Casey running at this meet, we beat many good teams.  In addition, we have a new sub-19:00 performer on the team, as Cara Drennan ran an 18:50 today!  The JV team saw several girls run PRs, including Jess Vosicky, Michelle Tan,  and Johanna Schnitzler.  Finally, the Frosh-Soph team had an impressive showing with a 3rd place finish.  They were led by two top-10 finishes -- Rebecca Stearns in 2nd and Cara Wicklein in 8th.

IHSA Regionals
at Katherine Legge Park, Hinsdale

October 25, 2008

The Mustangs are moving on!  The team got the job done at Regionals by finishing in fourth place.  Times were slow for all teams on this cold, slippery day, but our placement was enough to give us a shot next week to qualify for State!

IHSA Sectionals
at Reavis
November 1, 2008

The team headed into Sectionals with high hopes of qualifying for State.  They represented their team well by giving it all they had against very stiff competition.  Although we didn't move on, and are disappointed to see our season come to an end, it has been a fun, exciting, successful season, and we will all miss the camaraderie of the 2008 team.
