Mustang Band Booster Scholarship Options

·        Don Wilson Scholarship Fund – There are three choices that students can make as they apply for a maximum $200 scholarship from the Mustang Band Booster Don Wilson Scholarship Fund during each school year:  A) Any student attending a summer band camp may request a maximum $200 scholarship for a summer band/music camp.  B) Students may apply to request a maximum $200 marching band scholarship to defray the cost of the marching band fee.  Consideration will first be given to families with multiple students participating in the marching band activity. C) Any student may choose to apply for a maximum $200 scholarship at one of two separate times during any given school year for use in supplementing the cost of private lessons. 

• Music Bowl Fund Scholarships – As funds are raised each year from the profits of the Annual Marching Mustang Music Bowl, a maximum $200 scholarship will be automatically awarded to each student who is accepted as a marching band section leader and attends a summer leadership camp experience selected by the band directors.

Application Requirements

• Any student wishing to complete a scholarship application must complete three (3) service credits from the list below.  Credit will be recognized by the band booster parent in charge of each of the activities, or for band room service and/or library help, credit will be given by a band director.  The records are maintained by the Band Booster Membership Vice President.  For a listing of the booster parent in charge of activity, please visit the Mustang Band Booster Website at www.mustangbandboosters.com

• Students applying for summer camps and/or marching band fee scholarships must complete these service credits during the school year prior to their camp or marching band season.  Students applying for private lesson scholarships must complete these service credits by May 15 at the end of the school year.  Students will not receive scholarship payment until service credits have been completed.  Failure to complete service credits by May 15 of the given school year will nullify an application.   Service credits may not be transferred from one school year to the next. They must be earned within the school year of the application.

• Market Day Volunteer (June, July, August, September, November, December, February, April)
• Heritage Fest support (late June)
• Candy bar sales coordinator support (early fall)
• Extra Music Bowl support (late September, early October)
• Cheesecake coordinator support (November)
• Butter braid coordinator support (February)
• Plant Sale coordinator support (early May)
• Band room cleanup and/or library sorting & filing (anytime)
• Other opportunities as they become available (if you are feeling creative, please contact your Band Director or the Mustang Band Booster President)

Application Availability

            September 1 – October 1         Application window for 1^st semester private lesson scholarships

            January 15 – February 15         Application window for 2^nd semester private lesson scholarships

            March 15 – April 15                 Application window for marching band fee scholarships

            April 15 – May 15                    Application window for summer camp scholarships

            May 15^th                                  Deadline for senior band members to request band account funds

Additional Music Awards for Band Students
Awarded to deserving students as selected by music faculty members (no application required)

·        Michael David Samel Spirit of Music Fund Award – Two $250 awards are given each spring to two members of the band program at any level who establish themselves as leaders within the program and attend a summer band camp.  In addition, three $100 awards are given at the end of each marching band season for “Most like Mike,” “Outstanding Leader” and “Most Spirited Marching Band Member.” 

• Clarence J. Shoemaker Scholarship Trust - Three $300 scholarships offered each spring to three freshmen and/or sophomore band students attending a summer band camp.  They are provided by the Clarence Shoemaker Trust Fund.  Mr. Shoemaker was the director of bands at Downers Grove High School from 1928 - 1963. 

·        Music Department Year End Awards – Several local organizations provide scholarship awards at the end of year school year.  These include monies from the Downers Grove Music Club, Downers Grove Junior Women’s Club, and Friends of Fine Arts.

·        Friends of Fine Arts Summer Study – Students may apply for summer study grants of up to $250 each for camps and summer private lessons.  Students may also choose to apply for help in purchasing a new instrument, or equipment that would help enhance their music education.

·        Brian and Sheila Mosey Performing Arts Endowment – Students that participate in group travel within the Fine Arts program are eligible to apply for scholarships through this endowment through application to the Fine Arts Department.
